Damansara Utama Methodist Church
Melinda Yeoh is the communications manager at DUMC, Damansara Utama Methodist Church. Her vision is to see Christians living like Christians, and to communicate to everyone the right and relevant truth of God.
She shares with us how Jesus redefined her life, especially the things she thought she did right in the past.
What were you like before you became a believer?
I thought I was living a reasonably good life. I did what I deemed normal. I worked hard, I obtained good academic results, my parents were happy with my achievements. But I also started partying since 16, and was cussing as much as a sailor.
Then I got married. To a recent divorcee. With a cute young daughter. And an ex-wife with unlimited visiting rights so she’s always in the picture. I experienced bitterness and misery that I'd never encountered in my entire life. Suicidal thoughts started entering my head as the arguments and shouting kept getting worse.
My husband accepted Christ one year after we got married, but that did not help the situation at all, as we now had one more topic to argue about.
Who needs God? God had nothing to do with me. I refused to believe that Jesus has anything to do with a happy life. I’d seen my share of Christian hypocrites, and I didn't want any part of this ‘religion’.
How did you hear about Alpha?
Finally, I got so tired of everything, tired of myself, tired of all the fighting.
I didn't know when, I didn't know how, but my hardened heart started to slowly crack. And I started to question myself: “I’d been living life my own way for 30 years, but despite all I had achieved, all I had done, something was seriously not right… I need help.” I'd realised that all the ugliness in the world was done by people, not God.
So, I went for Alpha. I needed to have the answers. And I might as well go to the right source. No persuasion was needed from the husband — all he did was place the brochure on his desk.
How did you become a Christian?
Seven months after Alpha, I still hadn't accepted Jesus into my heart. I had this idealistic image that I would accept Him during altar call in church, but that never happened because I never went to church!
One day, I went to an entrepreneur friend for some business advice, who is — you guessed it — a Christian. Instead of giving me advice about business, he talked about God and invited me to accept Christ there and then. I naturally told him about my grand plan of becoming a Christian in church, but he looked me in the eye and said: “Look, we will never know what will happen tomorrow, so don’t delay this.”
So, this wonderful servant of God led me to Christ right in his office.
How has your life changed because of Jesus?
I have yet to turn into Mother Teresa, but from a selfish, un-giving person, I am beginning to experience the joy of giving. It is me who’s being rewarded by giving. Things that were so ‘right’ in the past are clearly not so anymore. I never cease to be amazed by the demonstration of His promise: “It is not by might but by My Spirit."
Oh yeah, and we have a very happy marriage now. Made right with God.
